The Horse That Built Kentucky
Using oral histories and personal artifacts gathered for The Appalachian Horse Oral History Project, this exhibit documents the ways that place and culture produced the mountain horse, and in turn, how these horses influenced—and continue to influence—human identity in Eastern Kentucky. Using oral histories collected from the people who have shared their lives with these horses, this exhibit traces the evolution of the mountain horse from landrace—the product of geographical isolation and necessity—to the establishment of three registered breeds known today as the Rocky Mountain Horse, the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse, and the Mountain Pleasure Horse.
Moments in Time
During the Fall 2023 semester, students enrolled in SOC 223 with Tiffany Raymond and Daniel Renfrow conducted interviews with the important people in their lives. In addition to gaining experience conducting oral history interviews, their goal was to provide insight into a person, place, or historical moment. This exhibit presents brief narratives that students curated from their interviews.
